Our History
A new railroad depot was being built in Needham and people of faith recognized the need for evangelical preaching. The year was 1854 and The First Baptist Church in Needham was established to meet that need. On April 27, 1856, the Needham Plain Baptist Church voted to organize as a Regular Baptist church. In 1888, our name was changed, having organized as a corporation under the laws of the Commonwealth, to The First Baptist Church in Needham.
We’ve been moving forward ever since. Like when, in 1928, the church was hoisted up on horse and carriage to be relocated to its current site at Great Plain Ave. and Warren Street. Like when, in 1967, we ran out of space for the ministries of the church and we added a full education wing to our facilities.
Even now we are a church that is moving forward. We serve Needham and the surrounding communities by creating fellowshipping opportunities for underserved communities. We have traveled to Mississippi, Louisiana and Oklahoma to clean up after hurricanes and care for disadvantaged children. We traveled to Muskogee, OK to lend our support and love to Native American children who needed know that there were people who cared. We have raised thousands of dollars for Haitian relief and support missionaries in Honduras. We even traveled to Haiti in November, 2011. It was our first international mission trip and a testament to how God is moving us. We are moving forward—156 years strong, still preaching, still serving, and still making a difference.
