Our understanding of righteousness is rooted in the notion of uprightness or right doing. However, when we consider righteousness in its biblical sense, we recognize that the word is inextricably linked to covenant: honoring the covenant and performing its duties or accepting the consequences of not doing so. God in his righteousness allowed Israel to be punished for breaking the covenant. In doing so, God was demonstrating righteousness.
